Cinnamon is a very old spice way back the Egyptian era and it was also mentioned in the bible as medicine. The spice was very popular that it spread throughout the whole world. The spice is from the branches of tree called Cinnamomum which is common to South East Asia, Carribean, and South America. There are different types of species of cinnamon and the two main types are Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) and Cassia Cinnamon or Chinese Cinnamon (Cinnamomum aromaticum). Cinnamomum verum came from the Latin word “verus” which means true. This is often used in herbal medical tradition. In addition, this specie is very expensive that is why others tend to use the other type of cinnamon which is the Cassia cinnamon for their culinary needs.
Cinnamon does wonders because first of all, it contains magnesium, fiber, calcium and antioxidants. It has many benefits like it lowers bad cholesterol by “improving serum glucose, lowering fasting blood glucose, and reducing triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol” (Carina Parikh, MScN, MSiMR, 2016) and blood sugar by insulin reduction, antibacterial, antifungal and its scent boosts our brain’s function. It can also help protect our hearts and helps our colon by its fiber.
I chose this spice because I am able to experience wonders of this spice. Based from my experience, cinnamon with honey makes my skin feel better, it is a flexible spice which you can add either in sweet or savory dishes, and it’s always available in the market.
