Spice: Nutmeg

Nutmeg is one of the few spices that can be used for desserts and it is not only for flavor but it can also help in our well-being, health and beauty.

In the old times, nutmeg is used for medicinal purposes that supposedly treats gastric condition and rheumatism. It has a warm, sweet aromatic smell. It is known to have an anti-oxidant, disease preventing and health promoting properties. In many traditional medicines, it can also be an anti-fungal, anti-depressant, aphrodisiac, digestive and carminative functions which is connected to respiration.

Nutmeg is also a good source of minerals like copper, potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, zinc and magnesium, which, according to the health benefits of each minerals, are helpful in controlling heart rate, blood pressure, co-factors for antioxidant enzyme, essential for red blood production and a co-factor for cytochrome oxidase enzymes that prevents formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract that can cause discomfort.

This spice is also rich in many vital B-complex vitamins, including vitamin C, folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, Vitamin A and many Flavonoid anti-oxidants like beta-carotene and cryptoxanthin that are essential for optimum health.

I used to visit random websites and read random books and I usually see nutmeg in a recipe which made me curious. Then I learned that it is one of the many spices in the industry which is used for both desserts and savory dishes that was why I chose this spice.

Nutmeg Cake Recipe

Ingredients

2 ½ Cups of All Purpose Flour                        2 ¼ tsp. Ground Nutmeg

½ tsp Ground Cinnamon                                 1 tsp Baking Powder

½ tsp Baking Soda                                              ¼ tsp Salt

110 g Butter                                                            1 Cup Coconut Sugar

¾ Cup Sour Cream                                             ½ Cup Milk

1 Egg                                                                         Trail Mix (optional)

 

Method

  1. Heat oven to 180°C.
  2. Butter and flour a rectanglular 5” x 12” cake pan; set aside.
  3. In a food processor, combine flour, nutmeg, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt; pulse to combine. Add butter and press the butter to the flour using a flick motion.
  4. Add brown sugar, sour cream, milk, and eggs; process until smooth. Add walnuts; stir in with a rubber spatula. Transfer batter to prepared pan; smooth top.
  5. Bake until a toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean, 45–50 minutes. Transfer to a rack; let cool. To serve, unmold cake, dust top with confectioners’ sugar and cut into squares and top with few raisins and serve.
